Choosing Your Snowboard: Which shape and why?

Choosing Your Snowboard: Which shape and why?

Directional boards

As the name suggests this category or snowboard is designed to be primarily ridden in one direction. This is not to say they cannot be ridden switch and the difficulty of doing so will largely come down to the degree of directionality, tip shape and most importantly your skill level. When we talk about a board being directional we are generally referring to models where the binding position is not centred, leading to a longer nose and shorter tail. The internal construction of the board will also match this, being asymmetrical in the wood layup to compliment the adusted binding position. When compared with the twin shaped boards covered later, these models will be easier to turn and with improved edge hold and carving powder. In addition, because the tail is shorter it will sink more quickly in deeper snow, essentially forcing the nose up to stay on top. The result is that directional boards have improved off-piste performance. As we take the directional shapes to a greater degree you will also find what is termed ‘taper’. These boards will see the width of the board reduce towards the tail, further reinforcing its desire to sink quickly in deeper snow. Tip shapes vary too and although some of this is more fashion than function there are examples where designers build differing shapes to affect performance. A good model to illustrate this would be swallow tails, where edge length is maintained but tail surface area is reduced in order to facilitate sinking and consequent nose rise. However, boards of this nature are generally used by experienced riders who either live in resort or have opportunity for multiple models in their quiver. In most cases we try to avoid this and recommend boards that offer absolute versatility so you can head to the snow in confidence that your board will work whatever the conditions.

True Twin

The contrasting snowboard shape is the true twin. The front of these snowboards is determined solely by graphic and are identical in internal construction from tip to tail, with the binding position being exactly centered. As such, the board is as simple to ride in either direction and this would generally suit a park rider or those who ride switch for a large proportion of the time. When selecting a board there is a tendency to gravitate towards twin shape boards as they feel future proof and offer the potential to become more proficient in your switch riding with time. While this is true in some respects you do compromise carving powder and powder float so try to be honest about whether you are willing to invest the time in developing switch riding. As a quick hint we would reveal that the vast majority of our staff use boards with some degree of directional shape and flex. However, don’t let this affect your decision making process if you plan to ride the domes on a regular basis or want to ride switch with confidence as there is no doubt it is a fantastic skill.

Directional Twin

Looking for a compromise between directional and twin shaped boards? You found it! The directional twin is attractive in offering the majority of benefits found in both pure shapes. These boards will generally be identical in internal construction from tip to tail and thus akin to a true twin in this respect. However, the bindings are set a little back from centre and these boards may have a little width taper from tip to tail. Given the consistency of construction one of the main attractions of the directional twin is to move the bindings forward into a centred position, making the board more like a true twin. In doing so you are able to further develop your switch riding, or take to the park like a pro.
