Wing Hire
Winging hire is now available at Robin Hood Watersports! Have you been looking at the offspring of kitesurfing and windsurfing and it’s something that you want to try? It’s a big investment but is it worth it? Here’s how you can dip your toe into winging without it costing the Earth.
Could this be you?
Why would you want to try winging?
Winging, winging, winging. It’s on everyone’s mind and it’s caused lots of dry windsurfing kit all around the country. Why? Your morning coffee is going slightly cold and you are searching for what activity you are going to do today. It’s around 10-15 knots and a beautiful day. Normally windsurfing is off the cards – However winging is on! Kit that can fit in the back of a small car, on the roof or in the van garage and give you the ability to whizz around till your hearts content. At Robin Hood Watersports, we want to help bridge the gap and give you the chance to get out winging.
Whats included in the hire?
We will go over the kit to make sure that its set up to give you the best chance of flying on your first session. The kit set up will cover foil assembly, foil position and wing inflation. We will also go over wing control on land, how to rescue the wing, wing power and depower as well as how to turn around to make the day as simple as possible.
Board
We have gone for the Quatro Wing Drifter as this is the perfect board for learning with lots of float and stability. Once in flight the bevelled rails and tail help if board touches down to then effortlessly release so you can carry on your flight.
Wing
The Ensis Score is a great wing for learning, its super lightweight so offers brilliant controllability and stability. This wing will be really supportive in your first flights and offers plenty of power to get you going in the lightest of winds.
Foil
Neil Pryde Glide Surf HP – 2300
When learning, the bigger the better with foils. Neil Pryde offer their glide foil in 2300 which is on the larger size when it comes to wing production, for some context this is around 3 and a half pieces of A4 paper. We put the Neil Pryde foil on our demo fleet as it’s really stable and gives buckets of lift.
How does the costing work?
Now to the nitty gritty part. How much is it to rent the kit? Technically it’s free! The rental fee can be used as credit against wing kit if purchased within 3 months of the rental hire. We want you to try before you buy.
We have two hire options available:
Full kit hire – board, foil, wing, leashes and pump.
£100 for a day rental and £50 for each extra day
Wing hire – Wing, leash and pump
£40 for a day rental and £20 for each extra day
Hints and Tips
Having the two options on the hire will allow you to slowly ease into winging if it’s your first experience with wind sports. Hiring the wing along works perfectly with a beginner windsurfing board or stand up paddle board, this will give you the basics of how to use the wing and hopefully work on some manoeuvres. Once you are comfortable powering up the wing and getting some speed then you can move onto the foil.
If you have a wind sport/ board sport background I think the full kit hire option will be a great starting point. After our quick land based demos you will be ready to hit the water. The learning curve can be quick if you understand points of sail and or have foiled before. You will be up and flying in no time!
Where can you wing locally?
The best locations for winging are RYA accredited centres, as these centres have had training on how to rescue and pick you up in a rescue boat if needed. This is really important as people tend to drift downwind in the early stages of learning. Another key tip… make sure its deep enough! If it’s a new location that you are going to make sure to ask if there is any shallow areas. You definitely need to have a wet belly button before flipping the board over and putting the foil in the water to avoid any damage on the foil.
