Pyranha Machno | Is it the right choice for you?

Pyranha Machno | Is it the right choice for you?

The staff at Pyranha’s Runcorn headquarters have certainly been responsible for some legendary designs during their 50 year existence.  Names like Burn, Everest and Micro will evoke fond memories for many, whether on local runs or epic first descents around the world.

The pressing question…. can their Machno stand toe to toe with these respected names?  It’s something that only you can answer and perhaps ultimately time will decide.  In this blog I wanted to cover a little on the concept and thought process behind the boat, as well as explaining who we think it best suits.  Read on or watch Joe tell you about the Machno to learn more.

Firstly, what’s the story behind the name?  Well, being so close to North Wales means a high proportion of prototype testing is undertaken on local sections of the Llugy, Dee, Lledr and Conwy.  Of these rivers be in do doubt that the latter holds a place close to paddlers hearts thanks to the legendary Fairy Glen section.  It just so happens that the Afon Machno is the tributary which forms it.  Now you know!

The Machno itself is 8ft7 long and 26in wide, comparing with 8ft2 and 25.5in for a medium Burn.  This reflects a trend of increasing boat lengths over the past ten years. However, compared to the 9R2 (8ft11) and Scorch (8ft10) it’s important to stress that the Machno is quite compact.  The bow is highly rockered and married to a hull with softer rails, being closer to a displacement shape than a pure planing one.  The result, a dry ride and forgiving, confidence inspiring feel. It boofs like a dream and meets the original design remit of being a boat to push the limits on the most difficult whitewater.

However, while still capable in this area the Machno has matured and remains an excellent choice for anyone wanting to push THEIR limits, not just the limits of the sport more generally. Whether your passion is 50ft falls or the local class three this could be the right choice.  With Stout 2 outfitting as standard you are guaranteed a fantastic and safe connection to the boat.  The plastic step out pillar reassures you of the ability to get out in the event of a pin, while the ratchet backrest and adjustable hip pads perfectly translate your movements into the hull.  With the introduction of Stout 2 outfitting Pyranha moved from an injection moulded to a rotomoulded thigh brace.  The result is a slight weight increase but this is more than offset by the improved stiffness and connection you will feel.

The nature of the Machno’s hull shape and rocker profile allows you to paddle whitewater with ease. It reacts whether you are a proactive slalon style paddler with high cadence or lazy ‘paddle when you must’ boater.  Of course, every boat is a compromise and if you improve one aspect you naturally hinder another.  If your vision is a versatile and dynamic kayak to surf and spin, snapping into every micro eddy out there then perhaps the Machno isn’t the optimal choice for you.  In this case a model with more rail is a must and we’d highlight the Pyranha Scorch as a fantastic example.  However, for anyone looking for a confidence boost, wanting to enjoy time on the water with friends and paddle gradually harder water with confidence the Machno is an awesome choice.
