Haiku Construction

What’s the fuss about?

When Goya and Quatro announced another construction we were all racking our brains, what could they have done now? How can we get any lighter? Is this going to affect durability? Hopefully I can answer these questions below.

What is the Haiku construction? First of all the name stems from where the Goya team is based on Maui. It’s where the magic happens, all custom boards are made and developed here. The construction is made up of around 75% carbon and 25% S-Glass. Now you might be thinking, why isn’t the board 100% carbon constructed. Well, they tried that and made a product that was super light but also a really harsh ride. Surprisingly you do need a fraction of flex in a windsurf board and this is why they use S-Glass. The flex acts as a suspension when blasting along and landing jumps. This construction is the one used by the Pros when they have their custom competition boards made. The traditional Pro Carbon construction is more like 25% carbon and 75% S-Glass. A 45° biaxial carbon fiber fabric is used for structural reinforcement and torsion resistance. This specific weave allows for more forgiveness and control. Overall the weight saving on the Haiku construction is from 350-500g.

As well as improving the construction itself there have been many other changes to the Haiku boards. A smaller mast track, smaller deck pads (still dual density) and custom fin boxes.

The finish of the board has also improved by introducing ceramic paint instead of acrylic. This means you can use less paint and therefore save weight. It also removes a stage in the production process that can cause inaccuracies. The ceramic finish is much smoother than the current finish so reduces friction on the water. It also offers better UV protection and better scratch resistance. Your board will look newer for longer!

The final touch is that all Haiku package comes with an MFC board bag. This bag comes in a really attractive royal blue/purple shade with vents, for those of you in warmer climates. The bag is a dedicated multifin bag so you can leave the fins on the board. A huge pro is that it comes with a plastic zip that will not corrode.

So, what will you actually feel on the water? Of course having a lighter board is attractive but this isn’t the whole reason for doing this construction. The lightness gives you the ability to get going as soon as possible so the performance in the low end dramatically improves. As well as this there is an improvement in stiffness and with this comes improved response. Your board reacts as soon as you give it any feedback, it feels more alive.

The Haiku construction is available in the Goya Custom Quad, Goya One and Quatro Polakow.
