Pyranha Firecracker Sizing. An explanation of the move away from S, M and L

Pyranha Firecracker Sizing. An explanation of the move away from S, M and L

The release of Pyranha’s all new compact half slice kayak, the Firecracker, has created a lot of hype and in turn a lot of questions surrounding the boat. Perhaps more than any other, what’s the deal with the numbered sizing, and which one should I go for? If you’re reading this, there is a high chance you’re aware the options for the Firecracker are 232, 242 and 252, representing the length of each of the three models in centimeters. A the time of writing the 242 has been released, with the 232 entering production soon and the 252 due at the end of March. The numbered sizing is a throwback to some classic Pyranha boats, including the Inazone, I:3, I:4, S:8 and more.

So why have Pyranha reverted back to this style for their modern freeride design? This is mainly to keep a level of fluidity throughout the sizes, creating a feeling that there isn’t necessarily a ‘correct’ size for each individual. In turn, this allows paddlers to choose a size which is not only correct for your weight, but more importantly, your paddling intentions. For example, you may want to drop down a size if you would like to create a more playful feel on the river, i.e. easier stern initiation on eddy lines. Conversely, you may go up a size if you desire a more confidence inspiring boat- this is something you often see even the best paddlers in the world doing when stuff gets big.

Ultimately Pyranha have opted for this system to stop paddlers feeling restricted by one size. For example, many paddlers may have paddled a Medium Pyranha boat in the past, and instantly assume they should only ever go for a Medium (assuming no weight changes). This system enables you to have a look at the specifications yourself, sparking the question, what do you really want to get out of your new kayak? Are you keen for Extra hot, Hot or more of a lemon and herb vibe when out on the river?

In time, we will have all 3 boats available for you to demo, which undoubtedly is the best option when it comes to deciding what size is for you. Until then, we’re only an email or phone call away if you need some advice! Keep your eyes peeled for more information regarding the Firecracker.
